Our dream started in 2009 after we visited a local alpaca farm. When we saw these long necked creatures, we fell head over heels in love. What is there not to love? They are gentle, kind (apart from a spit here and there), quiet, and low maintenance. We decided to start with a small herd of eight. Over the years, we have maintained a herd, which now includes some colored merino sheep as well.
Our alpaca farm opened the door to many new experiences for us. Meeting new friends and visiting new places lead us to learn to knit, spin, dye, felt, and more. From other farmers we learned about livestock care, regenerative farming, farm maintenance, among other things. Raising alpacas and sheep is such a wonderful experience, but what has made it so special for us is sharing this experience with you. We have many days on the farm where you can come out and visit the alpacas and sheep. Please check out our Facebook page or Instagram for more details.
While our focus is on alpaca fiber, we do appreciate the fine qualities of merino wool. Our merino sheep appear to be a tannish brown, but underneath it grows gorgeous silver gray, black or chocolate brown. The stunning merino wool has been a beautiful addition to our alpaca yarn. When the merino wool is processed together with our alpaca fleeces, the yarn has a very soft and lofty feel. It is yarn at its perfection.
The primary purpose of our farm is to make yarn from our fleeces. Our alpacas and sheep are shorn once a year and we send the fleece off to mini mills located in Michigan to produce luxurious natural colored yarns and rovings. We sell our yarns, rovings, and other items at our small boutique located on the farm. We also sell socks and outdoor wear that have been made in Peru. Our on-site boutique is open by appointment year round and we have regular business hours during the holiday season and, of course, you can find our products online.
We are MAEAP certified in livestock and farmstead. We are currently working with the Natural Resource Conservation Service to implement regenerative practices on our farm which include no tilling or minimum tillage, increasing soil fertility without the use of synthetic and artificial fertilizers, establishing a monarch way station and bee habitat, and maintaining a program of rotational grazing for our livestock. In addition, we have taken measures to eliminate plastic and excess packaging in our boutique. These practices reflect our commitment to regenerative practices and our desire to build a sustainable future.
